Cotswold Way: Wotton-under-Edge to Old Sodbury

Recently Harriet and I started tackling The Cotswold Way which is a National Trail running for over 100 miles from Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire to the old Roman city of Bath. Join us on our first stretch of this historic trail from Wotton-Under-Edge to Old Sodbury which took us along a 14 mile stretch of beautiful but challenging footpath.

As is so often the norm in England in September, it was raining when we got off the bus. We followed the Cotswold Way out of W’u’edge.

As we were walking up one of the little lanes, we met some walkers who told us that the field next to which we were walking was earmarked for a new housing development. Later on we wrote our objections to the local council to help save Holywell Farm and we were delighted to find recently that planning permission for the development has not been allowed, thus saving the green space for everyone to enjoy.
The path ran alongside a small brook, and adjacent to some lovely local gardens.

It then led us up a steep slope and into a cloud of mist that was sat on top of the Cotswold hills. We had hoped to see some views across the countryside but due to the weather all we saw were some wet fields and sheep.

Visibility was very poor as you can see and naturally the photography suffered. Sometimes you get lucky with the weather and sometimes you don’t; it’s that simple. You’ve just got to take it as it comes.

As the path wound into a pine forest we started to notice lots of pheasants, and many more in the field opposite. There were so many that we wondered if they were being purposely bred for shooting later in the year.
